07

What makes a good drum teacher?

A good drum teacher is not just a mentor but also a motivator on your musical journey. They help you unlock your creative potential and encourage personal growth through targeted exercises. When challenges arise, they support you in reaching your goals more efficiently. Additionally, they adjust and correct your technique to prevent injuries and maximize your progress.

08

Who is welcome to learn drums with me?

My lessons are primarily designed for adults—beginners, advanced players, and professionals who want to develop their drumming skills in a focused and structured way.
In special cases, I also work with highly motivated children and teenagers, provided they show genuine interest in the instrument.

09

What is the difference between a workshop and a lesson?

A drum workshop is more intense—both in content and physical engagement—and lasts longer than regular lessons. It covers key topics such as:

  • Hand technique & foot technique – Improving control and precision.

  • Coordination – Enhancing movement between hands and feet.

  • Legendary grooves & fills – Learning iconic rhythms.

  • Songs (over 300 Hits with original notation currently available)

  • Double bass drumming – Mastering fast and powerful beats (optional)

In the workshops, small technical workouts are also carried out, specific techniques are learned or improved, and a lot of music is played (play-alongs).

The workshop is available for 1️⃣, 2️⃣, or 3️⃣ participants at the same time, regardless of level—from beginners to advanced drummers!

10

What do you achieve in my workshop?

Through efficient concepts and targeted exercises, your progress will be significantly faster, regardless of the music style you play.

During the workshop, you will enhance your timing, refine your drumming technique (hands and feet), improve precision and accuracy, and further develop your creativity.

11

Where is the studio located, and what equipment does it have?

The lessons or workshops take place in a large, modern, and professional recording studio in Munich Maxvorstadt. The studio is equipped with two professional drum kits: a Tama Starclassic (acoustic) and a Roland VAD516 (electronic).

Practice pads, sheet music, and drumsticks are already waiting for you!

12

How often and how long should I practice drums?

The more often you practice, the faster your progress—ideally every day or every other day. Unfortunately, this isn’t always possible. What you practice is more important! With focused exercises, for example, 10 to 15 minutes a day, you will achieve more than practicing once a week for an hour without a clear plan.

When a new student comes to me, I first let them play so I can assess which exercises are best suited to help them progress more quickly.

13

Why is a proper drum technique important?

Good drumming technique is essential, whether it’s hand or foot technique. Technique is our tool to master the drums, allowing us to play more relaxed and efficiently.

Hand technique includes methods such as the Matched Grip and Traditional Grip, as well as drum rudiments, rebound control, Moeller technique, Push-Pull, and more.

Foot technique is typically categorized into the three most common approaches: Heel-up, Heel-down, and Ankle technique.

14

What are drum rudiments?

Drum rudiments are fundamental rhythmic combinations that serve as building blocks for drum grooves, drum fills, and drum solos. They form the foundation of everything we play on the drums and are often practiced on a drum pad. The most important rudiments include the Single Stroke Roll (RLRL), Double Stroke Roll (RRLL), Paradiddles (RLRR LRLL), and Flams.

In my video course Close to the Drums, I show you how to effectively warm up using these rudiments.

15

What is the difference between a drum beat and a drum fill?

Drum Beat” and “Drum Fill” are two central terms in drumming that serve different functions within a piece of music.

The drum beat is the basic rhythmic pattern that is played consistently throughout a song. It forms the rhythmic foundation and provides the groove. A typical 4/4 rock beat features the bass drum on beats 1 and 3, the snare on beats 2 and 4, and the hi‑hat playing eighth notes.

A drum fill is a short rhythmic variation or interruption of the beat, usually played at the end of a musical section. Fills act as transitions between song parts (e.g., from verse to chorus) or as musical accents. They are often more complex and creative, making use of different drums (such as toms, snare, and cymbals). 👉 Discover more on my YouTube channel 🔍

16

Do I absolutely have to learn sheet music to play the drums?

No, the drums can also be learned by ear, without reading sheet music. On the other hand, learning to read music significantly deepens and develops musical understanding. This is especially helpful when learning new songs, exploring different musical styles, or playing with others.

17

Why is the drummer important in a band?

A drummer plays a unique and very important role in a band because they set the tempo and time signature (e.g., 4/4, 6/4, 7/8, etc.). Another key responsibility of every drummer is the ability to play dynamically and control dynamics, as drums do not produce melody or harmony.

18

Where can I find drum covers and live performances with the band?

On my YouTube channel: David Klepic, you can watch numerous drum covers and tutorial videos (video lessons) for free.

You can also find performances with my party band Wonderland here: YouTube: Wonderland Partyband.

To stay up to date and always watch the latest videos, I recommend subscribing to both channels for free!

How can a video course help me?

After a class or workshop, it can often be difficult to remember complex rhythmic patterns. To make sure nothing gets lost, I’ve recorded special learning videos that show every exercise clearly and in detail – so you can always see exactly how each pattern is played.

With my video courses – Close to the Drums and Gaining Control – you can review, practice, and continue developing your skills at home, step by step.

21

How many parts does a drum set have?

The drum set is a percussion instrument made up of several key components.
The most essential parts are the bass drum (played with the foot), the snare drum, and the hi‑hat. With just these three elements, you could theoretically perform live with a band.

A drum set also includes tom‑toms and a variety of cymbals, such as crash, ride, splash, and other effect cymbals.

22

What is student learning area?

The student area is your personal online access — here you’ll find easy‑to‑understand video snippets of the song sections we played together. It gives you structure, confidence, and clear steps so you always know exactly how to continue practicing.

Practice at home with ease:

  • Each section is demonstrated slowly and clearly

  • You can’t forget anything because everything is recorded

  • You practice exactly what we covered in the lesson
